Confirmation in the Anglican Church

The Book of Common Prayer describes Confirmation this way:

“The Anglican Church requires a public and personal profession of the Faith from every adult believer in Jesus Christ.  Confirmation or Reception by a Bishop is its liturgical expression.  Confirmation is clearly grounded in Scripture: the Apostles prayed for, and laid their hands on those who had already been baptized

(2 Timothy 1:6-7; Acts 8:14-17; 19:6).

In Confirmation, through the Bishop’s laying on of hands and prayer for daily increase in the Holy Spirit, God strengthens the believer for Christian life in the service of Christ and his kingdom.  Grace is God’s gift, and we pray that he will pour out his Holy Spirit on those who have already been made his children by adoption and grace in Baptism.”

Confirmation has been practiced by the Church since its beginning in the book of Acts in the Holy Scriptures.

Confirmation Class

Candidates who are seeking to be confirmed into the Church will attend Confirmation class focused on two goals:

  1. Prepare for a Public Confession: In confirmation, the Church universal recognizes a mature and saving faith that a person has and accepts that person into full communion.  In this way, confirmation confirms the faith in the individual that is already there. In Confirmation class, training and instruction by the Church is necessary to ensure that the person being presented to the Bishop is grounded in the unchanging truths of the Holy Scriptures, the theology of the Church, and the practices of the Christian life.
  2. Prepare for a Work of the Holy Spirit: Confirmation is also a means of grace, where a person of faith through the laying on of hands receives a strengthening from the Holy Spirit “for daily growth in wisdom, courage, and humility before God in every aspect of” their lives to service and glory of the Lord.  Therefore, Confirmation empowers the faith of an individual as well as confirming it.  The Holy Spirit is unceasing in His work to transform His children to become like Him.  During this time of training and instruction by the Church; we pray that the Holy Spirit will work in a special way in forming the beliefs and lives of those involved to equipping them for the individual calling He has for each of them.

If you have been baptized, whether as an infant or an adult, we encourage you to be confirmed.  If there are any questions about the class or Confirmation itself, please contact Deacon Darren Jones and/or Deacon Ross Eddy.
